Thankfully, the InStride team was able to see my daughter fast, and I saw a positive shift in her almost right away.

The faces of anxiety and OCD

Meet Ruthie, 19

Experiencing social anxiety in her first year of college, Ruthie began to isolate herself—skipping classes, avoiding the cafeteria for meals, and having a hard time even leaving her dorm room. Her mood began to decline as her withdrawal increased and eventually she called her parents and asked to come home from college.

Ruthie graduated from the InStride program and is back in classes full-time. She is enjoying her college experience, thanks to her exposure practice and the new skills she gained. Ruthie’s parents are thrilled with her progress and feel more confident in their ability to effectively support her in this stage of her life.

Meet Tom, 18

Diagnosed with “just right” OCD and depression, Tom had been in therapy for several years but things were just getting worse. Feeling hopeless that things would never improve, he was hospitalized twice for suicidal thoughts, and ultimately dropped out of high school.

Since his InStride graduation, Tom is feeling hopeful for the first time in a long time and is now working on getting his GED. His parents continue to use the skills and strategies they learned to support his growing independence.

Meet Rose, 14

Afraid of throwing up, Rose had begun refusing certain foods, compulsively checking expiration dates and avoiding crowds—including at school—for fear that someone would throw up. Rose had begun to have panic attacks when she went out in public and had started avoiding school and dropped out of her extracurriculars. At admission, she had been out of school for 3 months, and her mother had taken a leave of absence from work to be home with her.

Today, Rose is in the third phase of InStride and continues to do weekly exposures with her coach. She is back in school, playing lacrosse again, and is eating the foods she loves. Her mother is also back at work. When Rose periodically experiences stuck moments, she uses the skills she has learned to coach herself and get back on track. Her parents and school feel equipped to support her in the road ahead.
